Funny Quiz: Bringing laughter and local pride together for South Australian communities

It isn’t just another trivia night, Funny Quiz is a South Australian experience that brings together serious trivia, hosted by some of the best local comedians.
What started as a side hustle for a quiz-obsessed comedian, has evolved into a unique addition to South Australian pub culture and a business that supports local talent, venues, businesses and communities.
Self-professed ‘quiz nerd’ and stand-up comedian Jono Makai created Funny Quiz in 2023. After working for a national pub quiz company, Jono grew frustrated by the lack of South Australian themed questions and realised there was a market for a comedian-hosted trivia night.
“It took 15 minutes for ‘Funny Quiz – serious trivia, hosted by comedians’ to drop into my head,” he recalls.
Holding the first Funny Quiz at Brighton Metro Hotel, the brand gained momentum and now hosts regular quiz nights at eight South Australian venues. To assist with the large demand, Jono assembled a team of local comedians, including Libby Trainor Parker, Jacob Jackman, Bill Egan, and recent addition Jason Chong.
“Funny Quiz isn’t all about the comedians, it’s also about our venues and local community clubs, schools and charities,” said Jono.
Jono takes pride in working closely with South Australian organisations and venues. Recognising a need for communities to find new and engaging ways to raise money for clubs, schools and charities, he established the Fundraising Quiz Nights initiative.
One of the standout features of Funny Quiz is its strong commitment to promoting South Australia. Jono was encouraged to register to use the State Brand to highlight the distinction between Funny Quiz and national quiz companies.
The State Brand is woven into the fabric of the business and appears in multiple areas, from social media to giant novelty cheques, Adelaide Fringe posters, pull-up banners and big screens at venues during each event.

Funny Quiz is a big supporter of Buy SA. For SA. and encourages creating relationships with local suppliers and other SA businesses.
“Funny Quiz always looks for ways we can support local businesses, from the makers of our giant novelty cheques to championing local businesses like Brighton Jetty Bakery during our quizzes,” says Jono.
Jono has also integrated SA’s own Magain Real Estate into each quiz by featuring a "Magain Real Estate Local Knowledge" question in each quiz. This hyper-local question highlights the suburb of the quiz venue, reinforcing Magain's expertise in the area while making the quiz more engaging for participants.

As Funny Quiz continue to expand the team, they are now offering corporate team building events, and encourage SA businesses to get in contact.
‘Serious trivia, hosted by comedians’ together with the State Brand perfectly capture what Jono wants people to know about Funny Quiz, a proudly South Australian business focused on fun and supporting local communities.
